Show Us Your Skills!
We talked about our skills last
week at Jakarta Motivators Toastmasters Club. One of the best things of joining
a Toastmasters Club is to become friends with people from different backgrounds
with various skills and professions. It really broadens our horizon.
Trissia, Arya and Mega enjoying the meeting |
Our first speaker was Trissia,
delivering her BM2. The title was “The Masterpiece”. She talked about the
concept of happiness. Happiness shouldn’t happen when you find a lover, when
you get married, or when you get a better job. One should remember that
happiness starts from within. Happiness shouldn’t only start in the future,
when a good thing happens. It should start from us, from ourselves.
As someone who holds a degree in
International Relations, she is well aware of the quote about Democracy by
Abraham Lincoln, “Democracy is the government of the people, by the people and
for the people”. She twisted the quote to explain about the concept of
happiness that she believes:
“Happiness is of you, by you and
for you”.
It’s really a splendid way to
make us remember better about the real concept of happiness. Thank you,
Trissia.
Mega delivered her BM2 titled “The
Sidewalk”. She told us about her love for walking. For her, it’s entertaining and
also keeps her fit. However, she regrets how the condition of roads in Jakarta
is not friendly enough for a pedestrian like her.
Sometimes the sidewalks are too
narrow, or merchants use it to sell their products, and the most disturbing is,
how motorbikes keep taking the sidewalks as their way to drive faster against
Jakarta’s traffic jam. “It’s like we have to bet our lives just to walk in the
sidewalks” she said.
She then compared the condition
of sidewalks in Jakarta and in other cities like Malang and Surabaya. If all
the merchants in Jakarta could be prohibited from selling on the sidewalks and
the government could be sterner in applying the rules of a clean sidewalk, she
was sure it will be nicer for all pedestrians in Jakarta.
Arya delivering his speech titled "The Paradox Lies in Me" |
Arya delivered his third speech
in Storytelling, titled “The Paradox Lies in Me”. He told about he used to be a
very, very kind boy. But that made him the target of people’s bad intention.
Other students in high school kept asking him to make their homeworks. One day,
a friend borrowed a substantial amount of money from him. When he asked for the
money to be returned, the friend refused and instead, spread bad rumors about
Arya.
This turned into a
disappointment, among other reasons. He decided having a good image is not
beneficial for himself. Since then, he decided to have a “bad guy image”.
Actually it is just to protect himself from disappointments and from people who
always want to use him for their own profit. Inside, he is still a good guy at
heart.
Kelvin delivering his speech |
The last speaker was Kelvin, who
delivered his Advanced Manual. He compared the condition of Bangkok, Kuala
Lumpur, and Singapore with Jakarta. Other cities and other countries were
behind us in the past. But they have caught up and now become better than us. They
get more tourists, become more comfortable and advanced for their citizens, and
turn to be the cities we look up to.
Kelvin really wished that
Indonesia, and Jakarta, specifically, could be better so he can be proud of the
city.
The leader for Table Topics
session was Ratih, who delivered good topics for the members to answer. She also
didn’t forget to invite Praw and Erwin to practice for the Area Contest.
Praw was ecstatic to win for Best Table Topics Speaker and Evaluator |
Mega and Trissia both won Best Prepared Speech, with Lia |
