The Jokers Night

Our second meeting of contest preparation series was themed “The Joker’s Night”.

Erwin as TOM
Last Wednesday, we tried to strengthen our resolve to join and participate in the contest.

The word “contest” is always a bit scary isn’t it? Sometimes we doubt that we’re good enough to join one, believing we’re not amazing enough to be a part of it. We tried to manage the anxiety about this preconception that night.

First, though, we enjoyed speeches from the prepared:

TM Iwan delivered his BM6, doing lots of characterizations in a speech. He told about the good defeating the bad, always. He gave his trademarked kung fu moves to color his speech, with lots of fighting sound effects. It felt like watching a Hong Kong action movie ^____^

TM Ikhwan also delivered his BM6, connecting the movie of Superman: Man of Steel to us all. “We are all heroes inside ourselves” was his message. That’s why, we must persevere in all trials and dig deep inside, the strength is there.

TM Ikuyo gave a presentation about marketing problems, depicting a fictional case of the rivalry between Enamie and Mie Enaaak. We became the marketing staffs in the company that produced Enamie and tried to think of what to do to handle the attack from our no. 1 competitor.

Ikuyo-san delivering her speech.
TM Sai brought something unique, asking her mother to come on stage and delivering a duet speech, finishing where each other left off. It was a speech about following your heart, being free, and finding true happiness.

Then, the time to absorb knowledge from the educational speech arrived.

TM Rudyanto giving his educational speech.
TM Rudyanto gave an educational speech to motivate members in contest participation. Sometimes, people know too much about the rules and theories then became stressed out about everything. He said it’s better to enjoy the process. Write your fun story. Fun, not funny. If you intend to write funny, you’ll force yourself to be funny. Just write your story first, then forget all the rules.

Once you get your draft done, practice after choosing your guardian angels: your group of Toastmasters friends who will support and encourage you all the way.

In the end, TM Rudyanto said, it’s not about the trophy, but about your goal. It’s about working to reach your dreams and believing in yourself. Everytime he faced something challenging in his life, he would think, “I can do this. Because once, I succeed in a Humorous Speech contest. If I can do that, why can’t I handle this challenge?”.

Kelvin as VPE giving a certificate of appreciation to TM Rudyanto.

The speech was really an eye opener. You don’t have to believe you’re perfect to join the contest. You just need to have faith in yourself, take the chance, and do your best!

So let us all participate in the contest with these ideas in mind!

Another unique session we have this month is the evaluation contest practice, in which we acted like being in a real contest, with contestants competing to evaluate the sample speaker at the front.

Kelving giving a certificate to Abdurrachman for being the sample speaker.
Abdurrachman from BOA became our sample speaker, telling a story about perseverance and focusing on your goal, also that there blessing in every disguise. Once, he wanted to enter a military position, practicing really hard for it. Regrettably, he didn’t pass the test. But the good side is, he lost his weight and became healthier, also believing that the lowest time might have its positive side too, and lessons in which we could learn from it.

We got four evaluators to analyze and review his speech: Tantia, Ikhwan, Satriyo, and Ariel.

Tantia giving her evaluation.
It’s always interesting to see their various opinions and suggestions for the sample speaker. They all have different ideas, yet, as evaluators, they were all eager to give reviews that could improve and motivate the speaker to be better.

With our diligent practice, the contest will undoubtedly be a hot stage!
