Motivators' Humorous and Evaluation Speech Contest
Every contest preparation meetings were held to anticipate this
one special night: the contest night.
After preparing ourselves for one month about evaluation and
humorous speech, the time to practice what we learned finally came. On July
24th, 2013, Motivators had the contest night.
Our headquarter were full with around 40 attendants, consisting of
contestants, members, senior members, friends from other Toastmasters clubs who
helped us as officers and judges, also guests.
Seven members joined the evaluation contest. The sample speaker
was Fathia, from Sandoz. Everyone observed Fathia's speech carefully, unwilling
to waste the moment to use all the learning to the max.
Fathia told about her experience working in London as a tourist guide,
where she had many difficulties and challenges. Her way of delivering it was
like how girls chatted on a night out with best friends, very engaging, funny –
the whole room was engrossed and laughing – plus adorable. She said the job in
London didn’t meet all her hopes and expectations, having many exhausting (and
disgusting) challenges. But she said God always protected her, so every
challenges and tasks could be finished successfully.
All evaluators except the first one were then quarantined in another
room. The doors were then locked as we tried to manage our nervousness to a
lower level. Some chatted, some stared at the floor, and some scribbled
furiously for ideas of evaluation speech at the five precious minutes given.
After five minutes passed, our notes were taken and then we had to wait for our
turn.
It was pretty tense. The venue was ours, and we were between
fellow members, but the atmosphere was completely different. Hands were turning
cold and faces turned paler.

After a short break, the contest was continued with Humorous
Speech Contest.
Tantia delivered a very interesting speech regarding her super
short, spiky hair, telling how hard it was to have that hair in Jakarta, where
people kept treating her as a man instead of a pretty, cute woman.
Suraj delivered an upgraded version of his previous speech, about
experiencing life as an Indonesian-Indian. What people called him, the
uniqueness of the ethnic, and how all the jokes about him made him more
patient. It was a very funny speech that mixed everyone’s stomach and made
everyone roared laughing in many tones.
Lineola opened the secret of her school years. The upright, proper
lady was apparently a bit naughty as a student. Or was it very naughty? It was
shocking to hear that she often faked an illness so she could avoid gym class.
Who could have thought, right?
Erwin delivered a speech about being bullied in junior high. He
recounted the troubles and confusion he had to go through before finally being
brave enough to speak out and saying he didn't like how the bullies treated
him, asking them to stop.
The speech was not new, but definitely delivered with better
packaging and confidence. It was funny, yet touching at the same time.
Ikhwan delivered a speech about his love life. His sad past
experience with a girlfriend who left him to marry someone else was a major
turning point in his life.
It made him wanted to commit suicide, but luckily he changed his
mind. He also won't give up in finding that right lady, using the term as
"fishing".
The slogan "fishing is believing" that he said became
popular to this day in our whatsapp group. It defines the struggle to overcome
fear and to open up oneself. His speech was entertaining yet taught us
something.

The contest ran smoothly until the end, and we are proud of all our contestants, who gave their best and took the stage. For us, they are all winners.
However, a contest must have a winner, so in Evaluation, the third
place was given to the new father, Rizko. Runner up was Kelvin. And the winner
was none other than our Tantia.
For Humorous Speech, Erwin won the third place, while Suraj, with
his hilarious Indian-Indonesian life speech got runner up.

The winner was Tantia! Isn't it amazing? She did a clean sweep!
The contest was successful because of the teamwork of Iwan
(Contest Chair) and Praw (Contest Judge), with the help of officers from other
clubs, and all member and guests who attended.
It was definitely a great night of entertaining knowledge as
Toastmasters. An edutainment night, indeed.
Personally, I am grateful because all contestants could come and
compete without disturbance from rain (that didn’t fall that night, thank God)
and went against the crazy traffic that night. Thank you to all contest
participants, officers, and guests who made Motivators Club Contest for
Humorous Speech and Evaluation memorable and fabulous!
Now, let us all turn ourselves into a compatible cheerleaders club
to support our champion, Immediate Past President Tantia, to be the best!
Go to the District Contest, Tantia! We're right behind you!
