Your Job is Not Your Career
Our theme last week was “Your Job is
Not Your Career”. Referring to everybody who doesn’t feel happy with your
current job and feeling of getting a better one. There’s of course always another
way: try to love your current job.
Immediate Past President Praw was the
TOM, and he showed a good set of slides about job vs career. A job is a paid position of regular employment, while
a career means an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's
life and with opportunities for progress. Which one is the one you’re
doing right now, a job or a career?
Puspita delivered her BM5, recounting
her experience using the social network “Tinder”. As a single lady, it’s normal
for her to seek a partner. Her friend recommended her to use Tinder application
to try searching for that special “The One”. She made several friends and met with
a few guys. One man she met for lunch was too touchy, so she had to say, “Don’t
touch, we’re not muhrims!”. She had lunch with him and it was far below her
expectations.
This guy proved to be so different
from her type, so she started to avoid him after they met, but he kept
constantly trying to contact her. Because she’s annoyed, she deleted her Tinder
account. When she told her friend who recommended Tinder in the first place about
her unpleasant encounter, her friend said, “I’ve succeeded after trying so many
more times than you. How can you give up just after a few tries?”.
Puspita still haven’t started
searching for “The One” again in Tinder, but she agreed that to find the right
person needs an effort. She will make the effort when her heart says so.
What I like from her speech was her
comfort in speaking in front of us, and her natural hand gestures. It’s nice to
see and made us understand everything she said better.
Tika delivered her BM2 about being the
Master of Ceremony for a big company’s event. She was very excited and nervous
at the same time, even leaving early to avoid traffic. Thankfully the traffic was
smooth, so she arrived (way) too early. She remembered one advice from her
evaluator, Ratih, and tried to make an eye contact to everybody in the room
before starting.
She prepared seriously and managed to
become a successful MC that day. It’s nerve-wrecking, but something she’s
really proud of when it’s done well. From Tika, we learned that preparation
would pay a good result. Arriving early would also make us calmer on all
events. And most importantly, joining Toastmasters really has its applicable
benefits!

Our theme tonight is all about
personal branding. What image do you show to public? What image does your
friends at work or your good friends outside work see you? What image does your
bosses see you? And what image does potential job interviewers see you? Let’s
talk about that at Mots tonight!
