Your Job is Not Your Career

Image
Our theme last week was “Your Job is Not Your Career”. Referring to everybody who doesn’t feel happy with your current job and feeling of getting a better one. There’s of course always another way: try to love your current job. Immediate Past President Praw was the TOM, and he showed a good set of slides about job vs career. A job is a paid position of regular employment, while a career means an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's life and with opportunities for progress. Which one is the one you’re doing right now, a job or a career? Puspita delivered her BM5, recounting her experience using the social network “Tinder”. As a single lady, it’s normal for her to seek a partner. Her friend recommended her to use Tinder application to try searching for that special “The One”. She made several friends and met with a few guys. One man she met for lunch was too touchy, so she had to say, “Don’t touch, we’re not muhrims!”. She had lunch with him an...

Show Us Your Skills!

Image
We talked about our skills last week at Jakarta Motivators Toastmasters Club. One of the best things of joining a Toastmasters Club is to become friends with people from different backgrounds with various skills and professions. It really broadens our horizon. Trissia, Arya and Mega enjoying the meeting Our first speaker was Trissia, delivering her BM2. The title was “The Masterpiece”. She talked about the concept of happiness. Happiness shouldn’t happen when you find a lover, when you get married, or when you get a better job. One should remember that happiness starts from within. Happiness shouldn’t only start in the future, when a good thing happens. It should start from us, from ourselves. As someone who holds a degree in International Relations, she is well aware of the quote about Democracy by Abraham Lincoln, “Democracy is the government of the people, by the people and for the people”. She twisted the quote to explain about the concept of happiness that s...

Love is Blind

Image
Do you agree that “Love is Blind”? If yes, why? If not, why? That was our theme last week, as the last week of the month of Love, February. The TTM, Lia, called many of the members to come to the front and speak about short topics. For example: “Have you experienced one-sided love?” “Which one is you in love, passive or aggressive?” “Does age difference matter in love?” The questions created strong reactions. As in: lots of laughter, embarrassment, and shocking statements. We had Nita who delivered her BM3 titled “Love Life”. At first we all thought she’s going to tell about her love life. But apparently, she said we should love our lives, so life will love us back. She told us about visiting the Badui tribe two weeks ago.  They lead a fascinating traditional life of the tribe, who lives without technology like hundreds of years ago. They could live in harmony with nature and have a peaceful life without smartphones or TV, but they are happy and...

Happy Valentine!

Image
How did you celebrate your valentine? With your loved one, friends or family? One of the best ways to celebrate Valentine is by having a merry time with your friends! So last week, we had a Valentine themed meeting at Jakarta Motivators Toastmasters Club. Bambang was the TOM who gave us information about the way people in other countries celebrate Valentine. Single girls in Korea would eat black noodles and wear black on 14 April, to lament about their status. A Europe countrymen give anonymous chocolate, in Norway, the men give special spoon to their loved one. People in Philippines love Valentine so much, they prefer to do mass wedding that day! Bambang also gave tips about how to spend Valentine with your lover/husband/wife. Having a romantic dinner at home, watching romance movies, or even dancing together are much better than spending Valentine outside, which can be very expensive and crowded. At home, you can also cook together, play games, or sing! Imam rede...

We Reached The Star

Image
On 13 February 2015, because of everybody’s hard work, Jakarta Motivators Toastmasters Club has managed to reach 10 DCP. This will motivate us to deliver more speeches and take more leadership roles! *********************************************** Our meeting last week was about “My Ideal”. An ideal can be our expectation of someone. An ideal can be an ideal friend, family, parents, or, as most famously termed when we hear about ideal is, an ideal lover or spouse. It’s always interesting to talk about love, and in this February, the month of Love, we’ll do it in every weekly meeting. On Prepared Speech session, we had two members who delivered their BM1. Mega talked about herself, her background, and Katumbiri, a dance that portrayed the gentleness of a Sundanese girl. We also had Tika, a member who studied pharmacy. Tika said something very memorable. “I am westerner”. We thought she had a descendant from US or Europe. Apparently, she explained furthe...

Table Topics and International Speech Contests

Image
*drumrolls* *confettis flying* *a series of applause ensued* Last week, it was our Table Topics and International Speech Contests! Yaaay! We were lucky to get an evening free of rain, and got 63 attendees.  A contest always means a lot, a lot.  It's the time to see the improvements of our members since the previous contest (insert the euphoria of mentors cheering their mentees, friends pushing each other to join the contest, and the classic nervousness before the one minute of silence is up). It's the time to listen, and to listen well. And least but not least, it's when we get to meet those Visiting Toastmasters from other clubs under our own roof.  All contestants posing after the contest with Contest Chair and President Contest Master Elizabeth got a Move Beyond Limit pin from Madame Marketing Coordinator of Indonesia The special agenda with the pictures of contestants The Contest Master was Elizabeth or Ebeth who had reh...
